The Sound Of First Light

The Meadow Lark

There’s a moment when the grass country holds its breath.

Light is still sorting itself out.

The air feels undecided and still as glass.

And then, from some distant perch, the meadowlark sings.
One clear phrase.

Unmistakable.

As if the land and that little yellow bellied bird are talking to each other, Yes this is where you are.

A Meadowlarks song is clean and deliberate, rising out of grass and fence posts like it’s calling out what is good in the world.
Out here, that matters.
In a place this open, confusion can stretch a long way.
The wind can pull your thoughts apart, or heal your soul.
Distances lie. And it’s easy to feel turned around without ever moving your feet,
or loved and appreciated all at the same time.

The meadowlark doesn’t bring any of that on accident.

It offers a note; steady, grounded, and sure, and somehow the whole morning lines itself up around it. They’ve always been part of this country’s compass. A sound tied to spring work and long days, to early starts and sunny days.
You hear that song and you don’t just recognize it, you trust it.

There’s something worth noticing in that.
Not everything needs to be explained.

A good answer comes from a long search.
Sometimes what steadies you most is a simple truth, offered clearly, right where you stand.
Right in front of you the whole time, only you did not hear it.
Maybe that’s the lesson riding on the meadowlark’s song today:
When the world feels scattered, and hard look for the note that rings true
and let it remind you where home is.
