Ritual Of Light & Sage

The Sage Grouse

Long before dawn, the sage flats hum with a quiet anticipation.

Out on the lek, the breeding ground for the grouse, they return to this same patch of ground their ancestors used;
a place stitched into their bones as surely as flight itself.
The show begins in the half-light:
air sacs booming, feathers rattling, wings brushing the earth in a rhythm older than memory.
But for all the spectacle, the lesson isn’t just in the dance.

It’s in the returning.

Sage grouse survive because they stay rooted in relationship
to the land, to each other, to the sagebrush that shelters them.
Their entire existence runs on a fragile agreement with the landscape:
You take care of us.

We stay faithful to you. When the sage disappears, so do the grouse.

It’s that simple.
You can’t out-dance the loss of the very ground that gives you life.
There’s something honest in that.

In a world that celebrates independence above all else, these birds remind us that strength isn’t always in standing alone.
Sometimes it’s in belonging
showing up for the places and people that give you steadiness,
and noticing when those bonds are thinning.

Maybe the question the lek hands us today is this:
What part of your world needs tending before the music fades?
What connection; to land, to people, to purpose deserves your return?
