Breaking Trail

Check out who showed up at our place when the last snow was falling. Three big bull elk, breaking trail in the new snow on the ranch. And let me tell you, they looked one part content and one part confused.

It's not every day you get to see these guys up close, especially not this time of year. So, it was a bit of a head-scratcher, wondering where they popped up from. They must have had quite the adventure, dodging cars and hopping fences, to end up here.
And guess what? I was so smitten with them that I got to work creating a painting. There's something about seeing such wild beauty just outside your window that gets the creative juices flowing, you know?

So I've been at it, trying to get down all that grandeur and grace on canvas. It's my way of keeping the memory alive and sharing it with y'all. Because let's face it, a surprise visit from a trio of elk? That's something you want to remember.
Anyway, stay tuned for the finished piece. It's turning out to be quite the tribute to our unexpected winter guests.
Until next time, keep it wild – you never know what wonders might wander your way.

Breaking Trail

Out in the dust of Nevada’s sprawl,

A buckaroo’s tale, as dusk begins to fall.

With a heifer as wily as a desert breeze,

She dodges the cowboys with laughable ease.
They say she’s a critter, just two years grown,

But she’s got the cowboys all overthrown.

Tryin' to sort her into the new herd,

But she ain’t havin’ none, not one little word.
“Boys?” she snorts, with a flick of her tail,

“Catch me if you can, but I’m sure you’ll fail”

With a buck and a bolt, she’s off once more,

Leaving them cowpokes with their jaws on the floor.
The Ol’ cowboss laughs, tipping his hat,

At the heifer outwittin’ the cowboys flat.

She ain't just ornery, she’s quick as a flick,

Dodging those cowboys, slick as a trick.
They holler and whoop in a dusty cloud,

She’s elusive and proud.

As she darts off in the sage,

wild and free from the cage.
So Here’s to the heifer, clever and spry,

The queen of the range under the Nevada sky.

She’s master the dance, in this cattle ballet,

With a wink and a trot, she’s off and away!
So the buckaroo sighs, with a shake of his head,

"A nod to her spirit," quietly said.

As the sun sets on a land where wild hearts dart,

We tip our hats to a chase that's become an art.
She'll reign as the gem, a maverick of the pen,

Six times a rebel, she’s outwitted the best of men.

With a smirk, they concede, "Alright, let her go this day,

For the love of the pursuit, she’s earned her sway.
Tip our hats to the spirit of the wild and dusty plains,

And the heifer that runs with the wind, where freedom still reigns."
